Grand Prix
The Grand Prix of Denver, part of the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series.
* : August 30 - Sept. 1, 2002.
* WHERE: The race will be run primarily on privately owned and maintained streets surrounding Pepsi Center. Impact on local businesses will be minimal. The only public street that will be affected is a portion of Auraria Parkway immediately adjacent to Pepsi Center.
* CIRCUIT: Temporary street circuit is 1.65 miles long, comprises nine turns and features 12 spectator grandstands.
* WHO: A team of racing and sports professionals that includes:
o Dover Downs Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE:DVD; www.doverdowns.com), the nation's leader in auto street circuit event management and owner of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach (www.longbeachgp.com);
o George Gillett, chairman of Booth Creek Management Corp. and owner of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens;
o Kroenke Sports, owners of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, NBA's Denver Nuggets and Pepsi Center, and
o CART (NYSE:MPH;
www.cart.com), which sanctions the leading U.S. open wheel motorsports races, the FedEx Championship Series.
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Unlike the previous Grand Prix event that was held in Denver (1990-91), the Grand Prix of Denver will be privately funded. The only exception is the repairing of Auraria Parkway to bring this street up to standard City code. All other surface improvements and safety systems will be the financial responsibility of the Grand Prix of Denver.
